Hoxie Summary
Hoxie is a city located in Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated along the Black River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Walnut Ridge and 25 miles (40 km) north of Jonesboro. The population was 2,780 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Lawrence County.
History
Hoxie was founded in 1881 by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad. The city was named after the Hoxie family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1882.
In the early 1900s, Hoxie was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The city was also home to several sawmills and gristmills.
In 1954, Hoxie was the site of the first successful school desegregation in the South. The Hoxie School District was the first in Arkansas to desegregate without a court order.
Geography
Hoxie is located at 35°37'25" North, 90°51'45" West (35.623750, -90.862490). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Hoxie is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city also has a small industrial park, which is home to several manufacturing companies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,780 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,213.0 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 527.0 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
