Hickory Ridge Summary

Hickory Ridge is a small unincorporated community located in Cross County, Arkansas. It is situated in the northeast corner of the state, approximately 20 miles south of Jonesboro and 40 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee. The community is bordered by the St. Francis River to the east and the White River to the west. The population of Hickory Ridge was estimated to be around 1,000 in 2000.

History

Hickory Ridge was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The community was named after the abundance of hickory trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1851 and the first school was built in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872 and the first mayor was elected in 1873.
In the late 1800s, the town was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and soybeans being the main crops. The town also had a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin. In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it and the population began to move away.

Geography

Hickory Ridge is located in the northeast corner of Arkansas, in Cross County. It is situated in the St. Francis River Valley, between the St. Francis River to the east and the White River to the west.
