Havana Summary

Havana is a city located in Yell County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Petit Jean River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Russellville. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Havana was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Havana, Illinois. The city was named after the original settlement in Illinois. The first post office was established in 1873.
The city was incorporated in 1881 and was the county seat of Yell County until 1883, when it was moved to Danville.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Havana is a small rural community with a population of 1,845. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with the main crops being cotton, soybeans, and corn. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 705.2 per square mile (273.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.98.
