Haskell was founded in 1887 by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. The city was named after Charles Haskell, a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1891.

Economy

The economy of Haskell is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a large retail sector, with several large stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 17.45% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 2.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
