History
Hartford was founded in 1881 by the Hartford Land Company, which was formed by a group of investors from Hartford, Connecticut. The town was named after the investors' hometown. The town was incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Hartford is located at 35°20'25" North, 94°25'17" West (35.340278, -94.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Hartford is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a large retail sector, with several stores and restaurants located in the downtown area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 790 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.3/km2). There were 863 housing units at an average density of 717.2 per square mile (277.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.45% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.90% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 8.45% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 790 households, out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
