Gurdon, Arkansas is a small city located in Clark County in the southwestern part of the state. It is situated on the Ouachita River and is the county seat of Clark County. The city has a population of 2,541 as of the 2010 census.
Gurdon was founded in 1873 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The city was named after railroad official William Gurdon, who was the president of the railroad at the time. The city was incorporated in 1883 and has since grown to become the largest city in Clark County.
Geography
Gurdon is located at 34°14'25" North, 93°7'25" West (34.240278, -93.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Gurdon is located in the Ouachita Mountains, which are part of the larger Ozark Mountains. The city is situated on the Ouachita River, which is a tributary of the Arkansas River. The city is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest, which provides a variety of recreational activities.
Economy
Gurdon’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several large timber companies, including Weyerhaeuser, Georgia-Pacific, and International Paper. The city also has a large poultry processing plant, which is operated by Tyson Foods.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
