Gravette Summary

History
Gravette was founded in 1887 by William S. Gravette, a native of Illinois. He was a veteran of the Civil War and had served in the Union Army. He had come to Arkansas in 1871 and had settled in Benton County. He purchased land in the area and began to develop it. He built a store, a post office, and a school. He also built a cotton gin and a grist mill.
The town was incorporated in 1891 and was named after William Gravette. The town grew rapidly and by 1900, it had a population of over 500. The town was a center of commerce for the surrounding area and had several stores, a bank, a hotel, and a newspaper.
In the early 1900s, the town was a major producer of cotton and other agricultural products. The town also had a thriving lumber industry. The town was also a major stop on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
