Glenwood is a city located in Pike County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Pike County and is located in the Ouachita Mountains. The population was 2,637 at the 2010 census.

History

Glenwood was founded in 1872 by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad. The city was named after the nearby Glenwood Springs. The city was incorporated in 1876 and was the first city in Pike County.

Geography

Glenwood is located at 34°41'25" North, 93°25'45" West (34.690278, -93.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Glenwood is largely based on agriculture and timber. The city is home to several large timber companies, including Weyerhaeuser, Georgia-Pacific, and International Paper. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,637 people, 1,072 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,190.2 people per square mile (459.7/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (204.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.45% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.50% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 2.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $26,964 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
