Garland Summary

Garland is a city located in Benton County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Garland was founded in 1881 by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. The town was named after Augustus Garland, the Governor of Arkansas from 1874 to 1876. The town was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Garland is located at 36°19'25" North, 94°14'17" West (36.323750, -94.237917). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Garland's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several poultry processing plants, as well as a number of other manufacturing businesses. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.45% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $26,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
