Damascus Summary

Damascus, Arkansas is a small town located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in the northwest corner of the state. It is the county seat of Van Buren County and is situated on the White River. The town was founded in 1820 and has a population of approximately 1,000 people.

History

The town of Damascus was founded in 1820 by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was named after the biblical city of Damascus, which is located in present-day Syria. The settlers chose the name because of its biblical significance and because of the similarity of the terrain to that of the Middle East.
The town was originally a trading post and a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The town grew slowly but steadily over the years and by the late 1800s, it had become a thriving community.
In the early 1900s, the town was a major center for the timber industry. The timber industry provided jobs for many of the town’s residents and helped to fuel the local economy.

Geography

Damascus is located in the northwest corner of Arkansas in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The town is situated on the White River and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The town is located approximately 30 miles from the Arkansas-Missouri border.
The climate in Damascus is mild and humid. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching into the 90s. Winters are mild with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing.
