Cotter Summary

Cotter is a small town located in Baxter County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated on the White River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Mountain Home. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Cotter was founded in 1883 by the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad. The town was named after William H. Cotter, a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Cotter was a thriving river port. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a general store.
In the 1920s, Cotter was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to a number of resorts, including the Cotter Hotel, the White River Inn, and the Riverside Hotel.
In the 1950s, Cotter was home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a furniture factory, a canning factory, and a paper mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 910.8 people per square mile (351.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.8 per square mile (156.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.
