Miller County Summary

Miller County is located in the southwestern corner of Arkansas, and is bordered by the states of Oklahoma and Texas. It is part of the Texarkana, Arkansas-Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Texarkana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,462.

History

Miller County was formed in 1874 from parts of Hempstead, Lafayette, and Sevier counties. It was named for James Miller, the first governor of Arkansas. The county was originally part of the Red River County of the Republic of Texas.
In the late 19th century, Miller County was a center of the timber industry. The county was also home to several large cotton plantations.

Geography

Miller County is located in the southwestern corner of Arkansas, and is bordered by the states of Oklahoma and Texas. It is part of the Texarkana, Arkansas-Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Texarkana.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 575 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (0.2%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Miller County is largely based on agriculture and timber. The county is home to several large cotton plantations, as well as a number of smaller farms. The timber industry is also an important part of the local economy.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 43,462 people, 16,945 households, and 11,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 75.5 people per square mile. There were 18,945 housing units at an average density of 32.9 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 73.2% White, 22.2% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 16,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,890, and the median income for a family was $43,845. Males had a median income of $35,890 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,845. About 11.7% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
