Booneville Summary
Booneville is a city located in Logan County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Logan County and the largest city in the county. The population was 3,990 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 3,685 at the 2000 census. Booneville is located in the Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains.
History
Booneville was founded in 1828 by James P. Boone, a veteran of the War of 1812. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1875. The city was a major stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from 1858 to 1861. During the Civil War, the city was the site of the Battle of Booneville, which was fought on July 7, 1862. The city was also the site of a major Confederate victory in the Battle of Booneville on June 17, 1864.
Geography
Booneville is located at 35°9'25" North, 93°45'25" West (35.156944, -93.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Booneville's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city is also home to a large number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, soybeans, corn, and wheat.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,685 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the city. The population density was 876.3 people per square mile (338.3/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 409.2 per square mile (158.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $26,944 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
