History
Atkins was founded in 1876 by William Atkins, a former Confederate soldier. The town was originally known as Atkinsville, but the name was changed to Atkins in 1882. The town was incorporated in 1883.
Atkins was a major stop on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, which ran from St. Louis to Little Rock. The railroad brought economic growth to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Atkins had become a thriving agricultural center, with a population of over 1,000.
Atkins was also home to a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a grist mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.
Geography
Atkins is located in western Pope County at 35°25'25" North, 93°20'17" West (35.423750, -93.338139). It is bordered to the north by the city of Russellville, the county seat.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all land.
Economy
Atkins is a small, rural community with a population of just over 2,800. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with the main crops being cotton, soybeans, and corn. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,890 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.2 people per square mile (266.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 282.3 per square mile (109.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
