Amity Summary

Amity, Arkansas is a small town located in Clark County, Arkansas. It is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, approximately 30 miles south of Hot Springs. The town was founded in 1872 and has a population of approximately 1,000 people.

History

Amity was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Arkadelphia. The town was named after the Amity Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1871. The church was the first in the area and served as a gathering place for the settlers.
The town grew quickly and by 1875, it had a population of over 500 people. The town was incorporated in 1876 and the first mayor was elected in 1877.
In the late 1800s, Amity was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton, corn, and other crops were grown in the area and the town was home to several sawmills and gristmills.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it and the population began to move away. The town was nearly abandoned by the 1950s, but in the 1970s, the population began to grow again as people moved back to the area.
