Altus Summary

Altus is a city located in Franklin County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County.

History

The area that is now Altus was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Tennessee. The town was originally known as "Franklin" and was later renamed "Altus" in 1881. The name Altus is derived from the Latin word for "high" or "lofty".

The first post office in Altus was established in 1882 The town was incorporated in 1883

In the early 1900s, Altus was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed Altus and the population began to move away. The Great Depression further exacerbated the decline of the town.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as the population began to grow again. The town was home to several businesses, including a furniture store, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

Geography

Altus is located in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas. The town is situated in the foothills of the Ozarks, at an elevation of 1,000 feet (305 m).
The town is located at the intersection of Arkansas Highway 23 and Arkansas Highway 64. The nearest major city is Fort Smith, which is located about 40 miles (64 km) to the east.
The climate in Altus is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 63°F (17°C). The average annual precipitation is 45 inches (114 cm).

Economy

The economy of Altus is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, soybeans, corn, and wheat.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a furniture store, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in Altus. The population density was 545.3 people per square mile (210.9/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 246.3 per square mile (95.1/km2).
The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
