Alma Summary

Alma is a city located in Crawford County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Crawford County and is located in the western part of the state. The population was 5,419 at the 2010 census.

History

Alma was founded in 1872 by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway. The city was named after the daughter of a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1874.

Geography

Alma is located at 35°30'25" North, 94°14'45" West (35.506944, -94.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Alma is a small city with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a Tyson Foods plant, a Walmart Distribution Center, and a Coca-Cola bottling plant. The city also has a strong agricultural base, with several farms located in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,419 people, 2,093 households, and 1,395 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,039.2 people per square mile (400.7/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 446.2 per square mile (172.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
