Valdez Summary

Valdez, Alaska is a small city located in the Prince William Sound region of the state. It is the northernmost port in the United States and is known for its stunning natural beauty and its rich history.

Geography

Valdez is located in the Chugach Mountains of south-central Alaska, at the head of the Valdez Arm of Prince William Sound. The city is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and fjords, and is situated at the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The city is located at an elevation of approximately 300 feet above sea level, and has a total area of 8.2 square miles.

History

Valdez was first settled by the Ahtna Athabascan people, who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to visit the area were Russian fur traders, who arrived in the late 18th century. The town was officially founded in 1901, when gold was discovered in the area. The town quickly grew, and by the early 20th century, it was a bustling port town.
