Alakanuk Summary

Alakanuk is a city located in the western part of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated on the banks of the Yukon River, approximately 40 miles (64 km) east of the Bering Sea. The city is part of the Unorganized Borough of Alaska and has a population of approximately 890 people as of the 2010 census.

History

The area around Alakanuk has been inhabited by the Yup'ik people for centuries. The first recorded contact with Europeans was in 1741, when the Russian explorer Vitus Bering sailed through the area. The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1867 by the Russian-American Company. The settlement was named Alakanuk, which is derived from the Yup'ik word for "big river".
