Akiak Summary

Geography

Akiak is located at 60°52′45″N 161°11′45″W (60.879167, -161.195833). It is situated on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River, approximately 40 miles (64 km) upstream from Bethel. The city is located in the Bethel Census Area of Alaska.
The terrain around Akiak is flat and marshy, with the Kuskokwim River forming the northern boundary of the city. The climate is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, mild summers. The average temperature in January is -14°F (-26°C), and in July it is 57°F (14°C). The average annual precipitation is 11.5 inches (292 mm).

History

Akiak was first settled by Yup'ik Eskimos in the late 19th century. The name "Akiak" is derived from the Yup'ik word for "the place where the river bends". The city was incorporated in 1966.
In the early 20th century, Akiak was a trading post for fur traders and trappers. In the 1950s, the city was a center for commercial fishing. In the 1970s, the city began to develop a tourism industry, and today it is a popular destination for sport fishing and hunting.
