Weeping Water is a small city located in Cass County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the banks of Weeping Water Creek, a tributary of the Platte River. The city is located approximately 30 miles south of Omaha and is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 1,285.

History

Weeping Water was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after the nearby Weeping Water Creek, which was named by the Native Americans who lived in the area. The creek was said to have a sound like that of a woman weeping.
The city was incorporated in 1872 and was the county seat of Cass County until 1875, when it was moved to Plattsmouth. Weeping Water was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, and the city grew rapidly in the late 19th century.

Geography

Weeping Water is located at 41°7'25" North, 96°2'25" West (41.123611, -96.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Weeping Water’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small factories producing a variety of products.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,285 people, 517 households, and 339 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,417.2 people per square mile (546.7/km2). There were 567 housing units at an average density of 622.2 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 517 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
