Wauneta Summary

Wauneta is a small village located in Chase County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Republican River, approximately 20 miles east of Imperial, the county seat. The population of Wauneta was 545 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Wauneta is located at 40°9'25" North, 101°25'25" West (40.156944, -101.423889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Wauneta was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Wauneta, the daughter of a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1888.
The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first mayor was elected in 1892. The first school was built in 1894 and the first church was built in 1895.

Economy
