Wauneta Summary
Wauneta is a small village located in Chase County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Republican River, approximately 20 miles east of Imperial, the county seat. The population of Wauneta was 545 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Wauneta is located at 40°9'25" North, 101°25'25" West (40.156944, -101.423889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
History
Wauneta was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Wauneta, the daughter of a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1888.
The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first mayor was elected in 1892. The first school was built in 1894 and the first church was built in 1895.
Economy
The economy of Wauneta is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in town, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.2/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 397.5 per square mile (153.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
