Valentine, Nebraska is a small city located in Cherry County in the north-central part of the state. It is the county seat of Cherry County and is the largest city in the county. The city is located on the Niobrara River and is surrounded by the Sandhills region of Nebraska. The population of Valentine was 2,737 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Valentine is located at 42°52'17" North, 100°35'17" West (42.871445, -100.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Valentine is the economic hub of Cherry County and the surrounding area. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and service providers. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and agricultural businesses. The city is also home to the Niobrara Valley Hospital, which serves the medical needs of the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,737 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,233.2 people per square mile (476.2/km2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 545.2 per square mile (210.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.45% White, 0.07% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
