Utica Summary

Utica is a small village located in Seward County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Platte River, approximately 25 miles southwest of Lincoln. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Utica was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Germany. The town was named after the city of Utica, New York. The first post office was established in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Utica is located at 40°59'25" North, 97°2'25" West (40.990278, -97.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Utica is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 359.2 per square mile (138.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
