Tekamah Summary

Tekamah is a small city located in Burt County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Missouri River, approximately 30 miles north of Omaha. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Tekamah was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Omaha Indian word for “big hill”. The first post office was established in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Tekamah was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was also a major center for the lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.

Geography

Tekamah is located at 41°59'25" North, 96°7'25" West (41.990278, -96.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Tekamah’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a seed company. Tekamah is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.7 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
