Syracuse Summary

Syracuse is a small city located in Otoe County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 30 miles southwest of Lincoln. The city has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Syracuse was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Syracuse, New York. The city was named after the original settlement in New York. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant water supply. The first post office was established in 1872 and the city was officially incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Syracuse was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory. The city also had a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, and a blacksmith shop.

Geography

Syracuse is located at 40°59'N 96°37'W (40.983, -96.617). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Syracuse is a small city with a limited economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The city also has a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics factory and a metal fabrication plant.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races.
