Royal Summary

Royal is a village in Antelope County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Norfolk, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The village of Royal was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Royal, Iowa. The settlers were attracted to the area by the availability of land and the promise of a new life. The village was named after the original settlement in Iowa.

The first post office in Royal was established in 1888 The village was incorporated in 1891

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Royal is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.
The village also has a small retail sector, with several small businesses located in the downtown area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.3 per square mile (143.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945.
