Ralston Summary
Ralston, Nebraska is a city located in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The population was 6,831 at the 2010 census.
History
Ralston was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, Thomas C. Ralston. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Ralston is located at 41°14'25" North, 96°1'17" West (41.240278, -96.021389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Ralston is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to the Ralston Arena, a multi-purpose arena that hosts concerts, sporting events, and other entertainment.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,831 people, 2,717 households, and 1,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,133.4 people per square mile (822.2/km2). There were 2,919 housing units at an average density of 912.2 per square mile (352.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females.
