Platte Center Summary

Platte Center is a village in Platte County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Platte Center was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Germany. The village was named after the Platte River, which runs through the area. The first post office was established in 1872. The village was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Platte Center is located at 41 25 17 North 97 25 17 West 41 4214 97 4214

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Platte Center is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in the village, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 517 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 730.2 per square mile (281.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.84% White, 0.19% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
