Pilger was founded in 1887 by German immigrants. The village was named after the German city of Pilger, and was originally intended to be a farming community. The village was incorporated in 1891, and the first post office was established in 1892. In the 1950s, the village began to decline as many of the businesses closed and the population began to decline. However, in the late 1990s, the village began to experience a resurgence as new businesses opened and the population began to increase.
