Phillips Summary

Phillips is a village in Hamilton County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Island, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Phillips was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after the railroad's chief engineer, William Phillips. The village was incorporated in 1891.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Phillips is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a bank.
The village is home to a few small manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer and a metal fabrication shop. The village also has a few small farms.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (294.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
