Petersburg Summary

Petersburg is a small town located in Boone County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Omaha. The population of Petersburg was estimated to be 545 in 2020.

History

Petersburg was founded in 1871 by a group of German immigrants led by John and Mary Peters. The town was named after the Peters family, who were the first settlers in the area. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a trading center for the surrounding area.
In 1873, the first post office was established in Petersburg. The town was incorporated in 1876 and the first mayor was elected in 1877.
In the late 19th century, Petersburg was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable.
In the early 20th century, the population of Petersburg began to decline as people moved away to larger cities. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500.
