Mead Summary
Mead is a small village located in Saunders County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Platte River, approximately 25 miles west of Omaha. The population of Mead was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Mead was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Germany. The town was named after the nearby meadow, which was a popular spot for hunting and fishing. The first post office was established in 1872.
In the early years, the town was mainly an agricultural community, with the main crops being corn, wheat, and oats. The town also had a few small businesses, such as a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.
In the late 19th century, the railroad came to Mead, which helped to spur economic growth. The town became a shipping point for grain and livestock, and several businesses opened up, including a bank, a lumberyard, and a creamery.
Geography
Mead is located at 41°19'25" North, 96°25'45" West (41.323, -96.429). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Mead’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, such as a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 771.7 per square mile (297.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
