Imperial Summary

Imperial is a city located in Chase County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chase County. Imperial is located in the southwestern part of the state, approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of McCook.

Geography

Imperial is located at 40°45'7" North, 101°41'17" West (40.7519, -101.6880). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Imperial was founded in 1887 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was built through the area. The city was named after the Imperial Land Company, which was responsible for the town's development. The city was incorporated in 1889.

Economy

Imperial is a small agricultural community, with the majority of its economy based on farming and ranching. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 790 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.2/km2). There were 863 housing units at an average density of 717.2 per square mile (277.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.44% White, 0.21% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
