Hershey Summary

Hershey is a small village located in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hershey was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Hershey Chocolate Company, which was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for the production of sugar beets. The sugar beet industry was a major employer in the area until the late 1970s, when the industry began to decline.

Geography

Hershey is located at 41°7′17″N 97°17′17″W (41.121400, -97.288100). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hershey is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy of Hershey is largely based on agriculture and related industries. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The town also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,323.3 people per square mile (510.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
