Hemingford Summary

Hemingford is a small village located in Box Butte County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the North Platte River, approximately 20 miles south of Alliance. The population of Hemingford was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Hemingford was founded in 1887 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Alliance. The town was named after a local rancher, William Hemingford, who had a large ranch in the area. The first post office was established in 1888.
In the early 1900s, Hemingford was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a lumber yard. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, and several churches.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The Great Depression further weakened the town's economy, and many of the businesses closed.

Geography

Hemingford is located at 41°45'25" North, 103°2'25" West (41.756944, -103.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hemingford's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
