Hayes Center is a village in Hayes County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hayes County.

Geography

Hayes Center is located at 40 59 17 North 101 17 45 West 40 9879 101 2958

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Hayes Center was founded in 1887 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was built through the area. The village was named for Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States.

The economy of Hayes Center is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 233 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 259 housing units at an average density of 822.2 per square mile (316.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population.
There were 233 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
