Harrison Summary

Harrison is a small town located in Sioux County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Niobrara River, approximately 20 miles south of the South Dakota border. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Harrison was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after General William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States. The town was originally a stop on the railroad line, and it quickly grew into a small farming community.
In the early 1900s, Harrison was a bustling town with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.

Geography

Harrison is located at 42°45'25" North, 103°2'25" West (42.756944, -103.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Harrison's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 811.7 per square mile (313.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
