Gretna Summary

History

Gretna was founded in 1856 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The city was named after the city of Gretna Green in Scotland. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Gretna is located at 41°9'25" North, 96°3'25" West (41.156944, -96.056944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Gretna is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a Tyson Foods plant and a ConAgra Foods plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,717 households, and 1,346 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,154.2 people per square mile (446.7/km2). There were 1,811 housing units at an average density of 433.2 per square mile (167.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 31.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
