Gibbon is a small city located in Buffalo County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated along the Platte River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Kearney. The city has a population of approximately 2,500 people and is the county seat of Buffalo County.

Geography

Gibbon is located at 40°45'N 98°45'W (40.75, -98.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all of it land.

History

Gibbon was founded in 1872 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after General John Gibbon, a Union Army officer who fought in the Civil War. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Economy

Gibbon’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Cargill, Inc., and J.R. Simplot Company. The city also has several manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant and a metal fabrication plant.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,521 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,093.2 people per square mile (808.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.00.
