History
Fort Calhoun was founded in 1819 by the United States Army as a military post to protect the Omaha Indians from the Sioux. The fort was named after John C. Calhoun, the seventh Vice President of the United States. The fort was abandoned in 1827, but the town of Fort Calhoun was established in 1855.
The town was originally a trading post for the Omaha Indians, but it soon became a popular stop for travelers on the Oregon Trail. In 1856, the first post office was established in Fort Calhoun.
In the late 19th century, Fort Calhoun became a popular destination for tourists. The town was known for its hot springs, which were believed to have healing properties. The town also had a number of hotels and resorts, as well as a casino.
In the early 20th century, Fort Calhoun was a popular destination for hunters and fishermen. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a brickyard.

There were 545 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
