Dwight Summary

Dwight is a village in Saline County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Dwight was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Dwight, Illinois. The village was named after the Illinois town. The first post office was established in 1872.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Dwight is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. There are also several small businesses in the village, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,408.3 people per square mile (543.7/km2). There were 369 housing units at an average density of 611.7 per square mile (235.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
