Diller Summary

Diller is a village in Jefferson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Diller was founded in 1871 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the first settler, John Diller. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1887, the town was incorporated and a school was built. The town grew slowly, but steadily, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of around 500.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Diller is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945.
