According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
History
David City was founded in 1871 by David Cook, a Civil War veteran. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, David City was a major railroad hub. The city was home to the Union Pacific Railroad's main repair shops. The shops employed hundreds of people and were a major economic force in the city.
Economy
The economy of David City is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms and ranches. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,457.5 people per square mile (948.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 983.3 per square mile (379.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $22,500 for females.
