Crete Summary

Crete is a city located in Saline County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Saline County and is located along the Platte River. The population was 6,960 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Crete is located at 40°37'25" North, 96°59'45" West (40.623607, -96.995890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Crete was founded in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Economy

Crete is home to several industries, including a large grain elevator, a meat packing plant, and a manufacturing plant. The city is also home to Doane University, a private liberal arts college.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,717 people, 2,541 households, and 1,637 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (619.7/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 651.2 per square mile (251.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.17% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 13.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $36,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $22,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
