Cortland Summary

Cortland is a village located in Seward County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Cortland was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Cortland, New York. The village was named after the settlers' hometown. The first post office was established in 1872.

Geography

Cortland is located at 40 59 25 North 97 7 25 West 40 990278 97 123611

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Cortland's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (717.2/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 762.2 per square mile (295.2/km2).
