History

Knox County was established in 1871 and named after Major General Henry Knox, the first United States Secretary of War. The county was originally part of Dakota County, which was established in 1855. The county seat is Center, which was founded in 1871.

Geography

Knox County covers an area of 576 square miles, making it the fourth smallest county in Nebraska. The county is located in the northeastern corner of the state, and is bordered by Cedar, Dixon, Dakota, and Thurston counties. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the western part of the county. The county is drained by the Niobrara River, which flows through the northern part of the county.
