Grant County Summary

County History

Grant County is located in the southwestern corner of Nebraska, and is bordered by Wyoming to the west and Colorado to the south. The county was established in 1887 and was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. The county seat is Hyannis, and the largest city is North Platte.
The area that is now Grant County was originally inhabited by the Sioux and Cheyenne Native American tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the county was officially established in 1887. The county was primarily used for ranching and farming, and the population grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
