Bassett Summary

Bassett is a small town located in Rock County, Nebraska, United States. It is situated on the Niobrara River, approximately 20 miles south of the South Dakota border. The population was 845 at the 2010 census.

History

Bassett was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Bassett family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1888.
In the early 1900s, Bassett was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a lumberyard.
In the 1920s, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The population increased from 500 to 1,000, and the town was home to a number of businesses, including a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a pool hall.
In the 1930s, the Great Depression hit Bassett hard. Many businesses closed, and the population declined to 500.
In the 1940s, the town experienced a period of recovery. The population increased to 800, and the town was home to a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a cafe.
