Arnold is a city located in Custer County, Nebraska, United States. It is the county seat of Custer County. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Arnold was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after the railroad's president, Charles Arnold. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Arnold is located at 41°17'17" North, 99°45'45" West (41.288, -99.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Arnold's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with a few small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 463 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 572.2 per square mile (220.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 463 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
